I’m lucky because there are plenty of parks where I can take walks in the forest where I live. Everyday when the sun shines (and even sometimes when it doesn’t), I make it a point to take my dog Holmes for a walk. I feel great afterwards. Now, I know why. A study in The Journal of Physiological Anthropology shows that walking in the forest and enjoying the benefits of Forest Bathing or what is known in Japan as Shinrin-yoku helps to lower cortisol which is known as the stress hormone. Too much cortisol, being in a constant “fight or flight state,” can lead to chronic conditions like heart disease.
